Greenland Ice losses set to Raise Global Sea levels

New research shows that even if the world stopped making emissions that warm the planet today Greenland ice loss has already locked in about a foot of global sealevel rise that is sure to happen soon

Overall ice loss from Greenland's ice sheet will cause at least 10 inches of sea level rise, regardless of the climatic warming scenarios, according to a study published on Monday in the journal

Nature Climate Change. That's almost the same amount that Greenland, Antarctica, and thermal expansion (when ocean water expands as it heats) have added to world sea levels during the past century.

Volume variations in the ice sheet around Greenland have been recorded by researchers from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, who attribute these changes primarily to meltwater runoff.

Based on "well-established theory," scientists have calculated that 3.3% of the Greenland ice sheet, or 110 trillion tonnes of ice, will melt as a result of the changes that have already taken place.

According to senior author Jason Box, a scientist with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, the sea level rise from this melted ice will occur "independent of any probable future climate

scenario this century." It's true that "this is water that has already passed under the bridge."The authors did not provide a specific time frame, but they do believe the sea level rise could occur

Before the century is out. The study's goal was to calculate what the researchers called "an extremely conservative lower bound" for the amount of sea level rise that may be expected from

Greenland melting, and "in the nearly certain event that climate continues warming, the sea level commitment only grows," as Box put it. Aside from the fast melting that can happen when the air

temperature is high, the warmer ocean water is also eroding the edges of huge ice sheets. The findings follow a report on projected sea level rise for 2022 published earlier this year
