A pair of late goals gave Sporting CP a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League, handing Antonio Conte’s side their first defeat of the season. The Group D encounter at Estadio Jose Alvalade

appeared to be heading for a goalless draw when substitute Paulinho glanced home Pedro Goncalves’ 90th-minute corner. Former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards impressed throughout and was substituted

to a standing ovation after the opening goal. His replacement Arthur Gomes marked his European debut with a slaloming run and smart finish in stoppage time. Spurs started each half in control but

faded as Ruben Amorim’s industrious side came to the fore. The visitors did have the ball in the net late in the first period, although Richarlison was offside when he received Harry Kane’s pass

before rounding Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adan. Edwards’ lively and intelligent movement provided most of the excitement on offer and in first-half stoppage time he left Eric Dier on the turf,

beat Ivan Perisic and Ben Davies, exchanged passes with Trincao and prodded goalwards to draw a sharp stop from Hugo Lloris. Kane was the provider for Spurs’ best two chances of the match early in

the second half, with a left-wing cross and a quick free-kick picking out Emerson Royal. The right wingback could not find the finish and it felt telling that the out-of-sorts Son Heung-min was

not on the end of those passes. Dejan Kulusevski replaced Son, who is now without a goal in eight appearances this season and, although he added some much-needed spark to the Tottenham attack,

the decisive goalmouth action came at the other end. Lloris saved brilliantly to tip Pedro Porro’s drive behind but he was helpless when Paulinho beat his defenders to Goncalves’ left-wing delivery.
