It had already been a rough start to the 2022 season for Trey Lance, and on Sunday it got much worse. During the first quarter of the San Francisco 49ers' Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks
the second-year quarterback went down with an injury and was carted off the field with an air cast on his right leg.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that he'll have ankle surgery and miss the rest of 2022.
The 49ers quickly announced after Lance went down that the QB would be out for the remainder of the game.
In the first quarter, veteran backup Jimmy Garoppolo replaced him on a reworked contract. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won 27-7.
The injury came on a Lance keeper on second-and-8. He tried to stand up but fell back down, clutching his helmet and rocking back and forth.
Garoppolo completed his first four passes after entering. Jimmy G., a former Super Bowl starter, is back atop the 49ers' depth chart.
Lance had a terrible Week 1 as the 49ers' starting quarterback, completing 13 of 28 passes for 164 yards and an interception. Wet conditions hampered him during the game.
Lance was 2 of 3 for 30 yards and the 49ers led 3-0 before he left. Lance gained 13 yards on three carries.
